WXXI

Here are 5 ways in which WXXI is helping to support local educational success: 1. WXXI provides free, high quality educational programming from PBS KIDS that our community can access via: on-air by watching WXXI-TV or WXXI-KIDS 24/7 channels, online with WXXI-Kids 24/7 live stream, and using the free PBS KIDS Video app. Multiple options for viewing provides anywhere, anytime access to developmentally-appropriate children’s educational programming. Local PBS stations, like WXXI, are # 1 in reaching children ages 2-8 in low-income homes. Why does this matter? An independent research study found that Ready To Learn-funded PBS KIDS content has a comparable educational impact to comprehensive early childcare or preschool programs. Research also shows that use of PBS KIDS Ready To Learn resources, such as hands-on activities, playful learning interactive games, and free learning apps (particularly by low-income families), boosts learning outcomes. For example, a recent study demonstrated that resources from PBS KIDS series The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That! increases science learning for young children from low-income households and trusted educational media builds confidence in both children and adults. 2. WXXI's American Graduate Initiative is part of a national project to show students, parents, and the educators the types of well-paying jobs available in the region’s high-demand job sectors. WXXI has been part of the national American Graduate over a number of phases. During the past several years, WXXI has collaborated with local workforce development partners to advance education and career readiness in the region by building awareness of career pathways. Through this American Graduate work, WXXI and our partners are helping to build awareness and emphasize the job-needs of our region, including: highlighting the thousands of in-demand jobs that go unfilled each year; ways to access careers through multiple pathways; sharing inspiring stories of how people found their career pathway; and more. PBS LearningMedia New York offers educators, students, and families in WXXI’s viewing area free access to thousands of learning-ready digital resources drawn from critically acclaimed PBS programs such as NOVA, Frontline, American Experience, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, and Sesame Street, and from expert content contributors like The National Archives and NASA. These digital tools are designed to enhance and expand learning opportunities through trusted educational media -- from videos, images and interactives, to lesson plans, articles and primary sources. Available to all educators pre-K through 12th grade, PBS LearningMedia offers content aligned to New York State and national standards, compatible with the tools teachers use most, such as Google Classroom, and contextualized with supporting instructional materials. During the 2020-21 school year, nationally PBS LearningMedia averaged 2.2 million users per month. Research shows that on average, students using PBS LearningMedia content outperformed national assessment norms by 10%. Learn more at https://ny.pbslearningmedia.org/ 4. WXXI collaborates with many local community organizations to engage and reach families, educators, and caregivers in our region. Over the years, WXXI has hosted in-person and virtual workshops and trainings, community-wide events, and informal learning experiences throughout the Greater Rochester and Finger Lakes region. As an example, in 2019 and early 2020, WXXI collaborated with Central Library of Rochester and Monroe County, Pioneer Library System, and Golisano Autism Center to celebrate Sesame Street’s 50th anniversary throughout the region. Through large-scale community events with super role models like Cookie Monster, Super Grover, and Julia, small-scale library-hosted mini-celebrations, and trusted caregiver and educator trainings, WXXI and our partners reached about 4000 families in the region. These integrated and purposeful engagement efforts help WXXI focus our efforts on finding partners and projects to support the needs of all families in our region, with special intention around lifting up our highest-need and underrepresented families. 5. WXXI uses the power of public media to delve into wide-ranging community issues. WXXI designs and hosts listening parties, issue-based forums, community concerts, and screenings/talkbacks to bring the community together to create dialogue around community topics and issues. Our goal with these experiences is to connect our neighbors to free educational resources and information to support their lifelong learning. With your help, WXXI can continue to provide these important services to help support the educational success of learners of all ages.
