*Help Us Send 20 Youth to Washington DC in 2020!* Next spring, 20 underprivileged/underserved youth in the Rochester Public Library’s Safe to Be Smart program will be ROCking their way to Washington DC – and your gifts will help them get there. Imagine the impact for the teens to be able to visit iconic cultural sites in our nation’s capital – including the National Museum of African American History & Culture on the National Mall, the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Capitol Building and the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. Picture their first view of the White House; how much they will learn from touring the Capitol and the Library of Congress; how much fun they will have at the National Zoo; and what they may reflect upon seeing memorials honoring Lincoln, Martin Luther King Jr., and veterans of WWII and Vietnam. *This is truly an experience of a lifetime for the teens: Please help us raise the $16,500 to cover the tour for all 20 teens and 4 chaperones.* Overseeing all aspects of the Washington DC trip will be the teens’ trusted role model and mentor, Safe to Be Smart founder/director Derrick Coley, who has a 20+-year career with youth and expertise in youth development, and staff chaperones from the Safe to Be Smart sites at the Arnett, Wheatley and Sully Branch Libraries. Since its inception in 2001, Rochester Public Library’s Safe to Be Smart program has provided a path out of poverty for tens of thousands of youth in the city through afterschool mentoring, educational & life skills support and career exploration. Last year an average of about 220 youth ages 12-18 were served each school day at their City Library Safe to Be Smart sites: at Central Library and in neighborhood branch libraries on Joseph, Dewey, and Webster Avenues, Arnett Boulevard and Dr. Samuel McCree Way.
