Rochester Children's Dyslexia Center

Every child is a star…Within every child is the heart of a superhero, yet a learning disorder like dyslexia can rob children of their chance to soar. With the right help and tools, however, this lifelong condition can be managed successfully. For fifteen years, the Children’s Dyslexia Center in Rochester, NY, has been helping children and their families overcome the obstacles of dyslexia. Tackling the challenge head-on, the Center provides both free one-on-one tutoring for children and training for a growing body of highly skilled and dedicated tutors. Millions of school children with dyslexia endure frustration on a daily basis as they struggle to acquire skills that many of us take for granted. An inheritable neurological condition that affects both boys and girls equally, dyslexia is an under-reported disability threatening the quality of life of nearly 20% of our population. It is a disability in learning, not intelligence, and children with dyslexia are typically highly creative, intuitive individuals. Some of the world’s most famous artists, innovators and leaders were and are dyslexic, including Leonardo daVinci, Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Agatha Christie, Winston Churchill, Tom Cruise, Cher, Jay Leno, and Charles Schwab, just to name a few. Some of the future’s great minds and leaders are today struggling with dyslexia; with the right support behind them, there will be no limit to what dreams they will realize and goals they will attain. It costs approximately $5000 to tutor a child for one year, but the results are priceless. Students see their reading and spelling skills improve, and more importantly, their attitudes change and their self-esteem grows. When equipped with the proper tools, these students can grow up to be President, cure cancer or end world hunger--they are the next generation of real-life superheroes. You can help us accomplish this important work by joining us as we strive to give children with dyslexia the chance to shine. With your tax deductible donation you can help support a child’s tutoring at the Children’s Dyslexia Center. You will arm a student with the tools he or she needs to overcome an incredible obstacle; this is your opportunity to change a young life forever and help a star shine! OUR SUCCESS: In the 26 years that the Children’s Dyslexia Center has been actively engaged in tutoring, over 400 school-aged children in our community have received one-on-one tutoring at no cost to their families. These students exemplify the positive impact early intervention has on the lives of children with dyslexia and their families, and their successes both in and out of the classroom inspires our continued commitment to this program. OUR APPROACH: The curriculum we use for tutoring and tutor training is the Orton-Gillingham approach. It is a sequential, multisensory, phonetic approach that is taught to qualified tutors for free. We can proudly say that our clinical model incorporates the latest scientific research in the field of reading and spelling education, and dyslexia and dyslexia remediation. The curriculum is tailored to each individual child as necessary and progress is made in small, readily quantifiable steps to equip students with the skills and the confidence they need to be eager and fearless learners. OUR MISSION: Our mission is to provide, free of charge, the highest quality tutorial services for children with dyslexia. We strive to promote and encourage the education of professionals, tutorial trainees, and the public to become resources in teaching children to read. Through support of clinical research, we aid to advance scientific knowledge of dyslexia to improve today’s standards and tomorrow’s care. Imagine a young Einstein, struggling to read the simplest sentences, even though he has so much knowledge to offer that will change the world! Imagine the frustration of watching his classmates and peers make effortless progress while he always fails. Imagine him just giving up, and never accomplishing all he had to offer. The effects of dyslexia could threaten to ground even the strongest superhero, but we have the tools needed to slay this immense foe. We are changing lives by making reading possible for children in this community, and you, too, can help change the lives of these and many more children by giving these superheroes the chance to soar.
