UR Medicine's Golisano Children's Hospital

When children are seriously ill or injured, the last thing their parents want to do is leave their support systems behind and travel hours away for expert care. Thankfully, families in the 17-county Finger Lakes region have access to UR Medicine’s Golisano Children’s Hospital — the area’s only children’s hospital — right in their backyard. Golisano Children’s Hospital has become an incredible place of healing because of support from the community. Thanks to your help, the hospital is a beacon of hope for families of premature babies, children with heart defects, adolescents with eating disorders, kids on the autism spectrum, children who have been diagnosed with cancer, those needing life-saving surgery, and families struggling with chronic childhood illnesses. More than 200 pediatric specialists provide a spectrum of care that spans more than 40 specialty areas — including everything from allergy services to neurosurgery and critical care – treating 85,000 children and their families each year. More than 20,000 pediatric surgeries are performed at the hospital every year, and the facility is the only WNY center offering pediatric cardiac surgery. Over the past decade, Golisano Children’s Hospital has been ranked as a Top 50 children’s hospital by U.S. News & World Report in 6 out of 10 categories. Those accomplishments wouldn’t have been possible without support from the community. But our work is far from done, and we need your help as we strive to improve the care of our children. Here are a few ways your donations will help: • The hospital’s new eight-story facility, which transformed how teams treat patients and allowed the hospital to bring the goal of patient- and family-centered care to a new level, opened in 2015. Although work on the second phase of construction wrapped up this summer, fundraising for the project is still underway, and we need your support for this important endeavor. The project includes the facility’s first-ever operating rooms designed just for children, private pre-op and post-op recovery rooms, and new intensive care units. • To improve and provide the care of our children, we have to attract and retain the world’s best biomedical scientists and educators. Your support will allow us to enhance our training programs, which are essential to attract the most experienced doctors and enhance the reputation of our institution. By donating to Golisano Children’s Hospital, you will be helping to educate the next generation of doctors who will care for children and researchers who will develop the treatments of the future. • Donations also support promising research initiatives aiming to develop new, cutting-edge therapies and programs that enhance of our patients’ quality of life. For example, your donations will help us give children with cancer access to early phase clinical trials, support an initiative to preserve brain function in children who survive brain cancer, develop more specialized research programs on injuries to the lung and brain that many patients in our neonatal intensive care units face, conduct research on how children’s hearts become susceptible to disease, develop minimally invasive surgical techniques, and much more. • Your generosity will also allow us to create a new child-friendly space for physical therapy and occupational therapy within the hospital. Currently, therapists are providing these services in the child’s room or in the hallway with limited supplies or items to engage them. Having a therapy gym with state-of-the-art equipment will allow our therapists to better serve our patients and families in a stimulating and safe environment. The new gym would allow therapists to help children build new skills or relearn old skills, with the toys, activities, and equipment they need. The therapy gym will help a wide range of patients — children who have suffered a traumatic brain injury from a car accident, had orthopedic surgery to correct a deformity, suffered loss of function from prolonged hospitalization or burns in an accident. These are just a few examples of how your gift will help support the region’s sick and injured children. Thank you for your generosity!
