The University of Rochester is one of the nation's leading private universities. We were established in 1850 as a private university and have grown to encompass many schools and divisions: School of Arts & Sciences, Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, Eastman School of Music, Simon School of Business, Warner School of Education, Laboratory for Laser Energetics, School of Medicine and Dentistry, School of Nursing, Eastman Institute for Oral Health, Memorial Art Gallery, and the University of Rochester Medical Center.. We are a world-class university because we distinguish ourselves in many fields and our scope is comprehensive. At the same time, we are the only university within the Rochester city limits. Rochester is an integral part of all aspects of the university. We value being in an urban center and its mix of people of many backgrounds and professions, of many levels of education and income.
