Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum

The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum is an all volunteer museum dedicated to the preservation of the railroad history of Rochester & Western New York. The museum interprets and educates the public through the restoration and operation of historic railroad equipment on its two mile demonstration railroad that it shares with the New York Museum of Transportation. The Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum is headquartered in the restored former Erie Railroad Industry (Rush), New York railroad station that it purchased in 1971 in derelict condition. The R&GV Railroad Museum currently rosters over 40 pieces of railroad rolling stock including nine diesel-electric locomotives, two steam locomotives, six cabooses, seven freight cars and several passenger cars among other railroad rolling stock. The museum is solely funded through donations, private grants, dues, museum admissions, and events/fundraisers. The museum has several active restoration and infrastructure projects in need of funding. One example is the complete restoration of a 1941 built Lehigh Valley Railroad caboose (#95100) the museum rescued from a scrap yard just days before it was to be cut up. Now completed, the caboose is part of the museum's operating equipment collection where the visiting public can ride on it to learn firsthand what it was like to be on board a real railroad caboose. This year we have purchased the Despatch #5, a 1924 Vulcan 0-4-0T tank engine that was used at the Merchants Despatch (MDT) car shop in East Rochester, NY. We are soliciting donations and grants to help fund the restoration of this rare engine that is part of the railroading history of the Rochester area. Your gift will help fund these and other projects around the museum. Your donation today will help us continue to preserve and share the rich railroad history of Rochester & Western New York. Thank you!
